6 Steps To Take Following a Car Accident

When you are driving along and another vehicle collides with yours, it can be a life shaking event. It can also be expensive. This is especially true if you or anyone in the car sustains injuries.

Although automobile insurance usually covers some of the costs, there are usually limits. For this reason, many people look for a reputable car wreck attorney who can help them sort out the situation in a more favorable way. Before contacting a lawyer, however, you need to know what to do at the scene of the accident.

1. Check Everyone’s Safety

As soon the vehicle stops moving and you are able to look around, check everyone’s safety. If anyone has serious injuries, call 9-1-1 immediately. Safety is always one of the most important steps to take after a vehicle collision.

2. Move Yourself and Vehicles Away From Danger

Depending on the location, vehicle condition and whether everyone can move, relocate all people and vehicles away from danger, if possible. If it is not possible, try creating some kind of way for other nearby drivers to see you so they do not hit you.

3. Contact Police

Even if you have a minor accident, it is best to contact the police so they can make a police report. If there are vehicle damages or bodily injuries that you need to make a claim for, your insurance company will need the report.

4. Collect Personal Information

Before anyone leaves the scene, make sure to exchange contact information and insurance details with all parties who are part of the accident. While doing this, however, be sure to avoid admitting responsibility or saying anything that someone could use against you.

5. Document the Scene

Another step to take after your accident is to document the scene. Luckily, most cell phones now have cameras and recording options that can make this step a breeze. Take pictures and note any details that you might need to remember to tell your insurer.

6. Call Your Auto Insurer

After gathering all of the necessary information at the scene, contact your insurance agency as soon as you are able to. Although processes can vary across insurers, most have a straightforward claims process, and the representatives can help you through it. Contact a lawyer before admitting fault though.

Car accidents are not something anyone wants to have, but knowing what to do when one happens can make the situation significantly easier for everyone.
